History

The Ada Area Chamber of Commerce was first incorporated on December 23, 1909; however this was not the beginning. In 1901 the Commercial Club was organized, it was comprised of community leaders whose goal was promoting Ada. The first collaboration of this group of early community merchants’ was to build a bridge across Sandy Creek, thus allowing cotton to be hauled into Ada’s cotton gins and compress. As a result, cotton became an early economic stimulus.

In 1907, a group of citizens came together to form the 25,000 Club. It was both a social and civic club with the goal of making Ada a city with 25,000 citizens. It was Ada’s first male social club and the Commercial Club gave way to it as a civic club. The members organized on April 20, 1907 and soon had the second floor at 102 east Main secured as their meeting place. Many decisions affecting the growth of Ada were made in that location. The 25,000 Club made great strides in improving the city of Ada. They lobbied the legislature and raised monies that were needed to improve the community.

In 1911, the 25,000 Club changed its name to the Ada Chamber of Commerce, but it would be many years before it would become chartered. There were many ups and downs for Ada and the Chamber of Commerce. The years saw news businesses come and some even fail, roads were improved, wars were fought and citizens came together to combat postwar depression.

The Ada Chamber of Commerce became the first chartered and incorporated chamber in Oklahoma. On December 23, 1924 the certificate of incorporation was issued by the state with W.D. Little, R.W. Simpson, and O.E. Parker signing the articles of incorporation. The certificate still hangs in the Chamber office today.
